intent-grill

Purpose

Interviews the user about a vague or high-stakes request before a task is written.

Source Skill purpose

When to use it

Use intent-grill before a vague or high-stakes request becomes a task. It maps open decisions about scope, behavior, data, UI, failure modes and non-goals, then asks one dependency-ready question at a time. Each question offers options, a recommendation and the reason the answer matters. The user decides; the skill never fills a branch by guessing. The resulting intent record distinguishes resolved and deferred choices and supplies candidate acceptance criteria and out-of-scope lines for task-author and planning.

A recorded answer belongs to the person who gave it, and a second decision implied by that answer waits its own turn. The method reads back the understood choice and marks guesses. It asks about observable users, limits and failure behavior rather than implementation libraries. Only the user can defer a branch; the intent ledger preserves the decision history before task drafting begins.

Steps of the skill, in source order

Source Flow

  1. Take the request Record the user's words and resume any in-progress intent record.

    Source Flow

  2. Read bounded context Inspect only the named project areas needed to avoid redundant questions.

    Source Flow

  3. Build the decision tree Place open scope, behavior, data and UI choices in dependency order.

    Source Flow

  4. Validate the record Write the in-progress tree and run its format validator.

    Source Flow

  5. Choose next question Select the first open decision whose prerequisites are resolved.

    Source Flow

  6. Ask one question Record the round, then send options and recommendation to the user.

    Source Flow

  7. Record the answer Preserve the answer and who decided it, then resolve or defer its branch.

    Source Flow

  8. Derive task candidates Turn settled choices into candidate criteria and out-of-scope statements.

    Source Flow

  9. Report decisions Return resolved choices, deferrals and candidates without deciding for the user.

Key rules

  • Only the request or user may resolve a decision.

    Source Hard rules

  • Ask one decision per round in dependency order.

    Source Hard rules

  • Record choices already settled instead of asking them again.

    Source Hard rules

  • Give each question options, consequences and a recommended answer.

    Source Hard rules

  • Ask about observable intent, not libraries or implementation choices.

    Source Hard rules

Output and gate

Output

  • Write the intent record with decisions, deferred branches and task candidates.

The skill definition states no gate rule.
